What is Arsenic?
Metalloid element (As) that occurs naturally in soil and groundwater. The inorganic forms are the toxic ones; organic arsenic compounds in seafood are far less concerning.
Rice and rice-based products absorb it most efficiently among common foods, and it also shows up in fruit juices, mineral-rich powders and some water sources. Testing that separates inorganic from total arsenic matters — labels rarely make that distinction.
What to watch
- Inorganic arsenic is a known human carcinogen (skin, bladder, lung) with chronic exposure.
- Chronic exposure is also associated with skin lesions, cardiovascular effects, and developmental harm.
- Rice-heavy diets (including infant rice cereal) concentrate exposure.
