Ingredient
Benzoyl Peroxide
Scout's take
Benzoyl Peroxide at 5.5 percent is the active acne-fighting ingredient. Unlike the rinse-off CeraVe products, this is a leave-on facial cream — meaning the benzene contamination has prolonged contact with skin. BPO spontaneously decomposes into benzene, particularly at warmer temperatures, and Effaclar Duo produced the highest documented benzene levels in Valisure's testing.
More from Scout's analyses
FDA-approved acne active in two of the three kit products (rinse-off Cleanser + leave-on Treatment). BPO spontaneously degrades into benzene via free-radical pathways, especially under heat.
from the analysis of Proactiv 3-Step Convenience Pak (2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide)Highest BPO concentration in the Proactiv line. BPO is inherently unstable and spontaneously degrades into benzene via free-radical pathways, especially under heat.
from the analysis of Proactiv Emergency Blemish Relief (5% Benzoyl Peroxide)FDA-approved acne active, but it is inherently unstable and spontaneously degrades into benzene via free-radical pathways, especially under heat.
