What is Hypromellose?

Hypromellose, also known as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a synthetic compound derived from cellulose, the main component of plant cell walls. It is created through a chemical process that involves treating cellulose with an alcohol-based solution, resulting in a white to off-white powder.

This ingredient is commonly used as a thickener, emulsifier, and film former in various food and pharmaceutical products. In food, it helps stabilize mixtures and enhance texture, while in medications, it's used in controlled-release tablets due to its ability to form a gel-like barrier in the digestive system. Current research suggests hypromellose is generally well-tolerated, with few reported adverse effects; however, more extensive studies could provide further insights.

When you see hypromellose on a label, it's typically in small amounts used for functional purposes rather than nutritional ones. It doesn't contribute any significant nutrients or calories.
