PFAS
What is PFAS?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — thousands of fluorinated compounds prized for grease- and water-resistance (nonstick coatings, food wrappers, waterproofing). They earn the "forever chemicals" name by resisting breakdown in the environment and the body.
In product testing they usually indicate packaging or water contamination. EPA's 2024 drinking-water rule set enforceable near-zero limits for the two legacy compounds, PFOA and PFOS.
What to watch
- PFOA and PFOS are linked to immune, thyroid, liver and developmental effects at population exposure levels.
- Extreme persistence means exposures accumulate over years.
