What is Pharmaceuticals?

Pharmaceuticals in water are the trace amounts of medicines — painkillers, antibiotics, blood-pressure drugs, hormones from birth control and hormone therapy, antidepressants — that pass through people and animals, survive wastewater treatment, and end up in rivers and, in small amounts, tap water. The concerns are about the long game: chronic low-dose exposure to mixtures, hormone-active compounds affecting fish and wildlife downstream of treatment plants, and antibiotic residues contributing to resistant bacteria.

On a water filter, "pharmaceuticals" is a claim tested under NSF/ANSI 401, which covers a list of emerging compounds including ibuprofen, naproxen, estrone and a few others. Activated carbon reduces many of them; reverse osmosis removes most. Not flushing unused medication is the upstream fix.
