Reduced fat milk
What is Reduced fat milk?
Reduced fat milk is regular cow's milk that has had some of its fat removed. It typically contains about 2% milk fat compared to the approximately 3.25% found in whole milk. This reduction in fat is achieved through a process called centrifugation, which separates the cream from the milk.
Reduced fat milk is used in a variety of food and beverage products to provide dairy nutrition while containing less saturated fat than whole milk. Nutritionally, it retains most of the vitamins and minerals found in whole milk, such as calcium and vitamin D, although some fat-soluble vitamins may be lower.
When examining a label, note that reduced fat milk still contains lactose, which may be a concern for those with lactose intolerance. It is often fortified with vitamins A and D to compensate for the reduction in these fat-soluble vitamins.
