Summary

The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane scores 92/100. A single-ingredient skin oil — squalane, derived from olives (not from shark liver, which is the unethical legacy source for this molecule). Squalane is the saturated form of squalene, identical to a major component of human sebum, making it exceptionally biocompatible: non-comedogenic, deeply moisturizing, antioxidant, and stable. No water, no preservative, no fragrance, no chelator — just the active. The minor caveat is that converting olive squalene to squalane requires hydrogenation (a processing step), which is why this scores 92 instead of 95–100 (raw plant oils). One of the cleanest commercial skincare products on the market.

Squalane (Plant-Derived, 100%)
Very Good

The only ingredient. Plant-derived from olives (alternative sources include sugarcane fermentation by Amyris). Identical to a major component of human sebum, making it exceptionally biocompatible: lightweight, non-comedogenic, deeply moisturizing, naturally antioxidant, and shelf-stable without preservatives. Replaces the ethically-fraught shark-liver-derived squalane that dominated the industry until ~2010.
