What is Sulfate?
Sulfate is a mineral composed of sulfur and oxygen (SO4). It's found naturally in the environment, as well as in many mineral or spring waters. Sulfates can be obtained through the oxidation of sulfide minerals or from sulfate-rich rocks.
In food and drinks, sulfates are used primarily in mineral and spring waters as a natural component due to their presence in certain water sources. While generally considered safe, some studies suggest that high levels of sulfates in water might cause gastrointestinal discomfort in sensitive individuals.
When reviewing labels, finding sulfate in a product can indicate the natural presence of minerals, particularly in beverages drawn from mineral-rich sources.
